On Sunday 3 September, Amanda and Angus Duncan braved the heatwave and ran the London Big Half Marathon to raise money for Airedale Hospital and Community Charity.

The pair decided to fundraise for the Palliative Care department, a cause close to their hearts as Amanda’s mother had sadly passed away under their end-of-life care on Ward 7.

At the time of her mother’s care, the family took comfort in a refreshment trolley provided by the team, that contained an insulated flask for hot drinks, biscuits, and many other refreshments that were regularly refilled and replaced throughout the night.

The pair decided to run the London Big Half Marathon to fundraise for a new refreshment trolley so that all families of patients receiving end-of-life care can benefit from the refreshments, as well as raising money for a new Bluetooth speaker that had gone missing at the time of their visits.

Amanda said: “For both Angus and myself The Big Half was an opportunity to put our love of running to good use, to give something back to the staff both on Ward 7 and the Palliative Care Team who went above and beyond to look after my mum and us as a family.

“My mum would have been so proud, as she was an extremely active individual, who spent many hours walking even in the midst of her cancer treatment.

“We are thrilled and extremely grateful to everyone who donated.”

Nichola Tullet from the Airedale Hospital Palliative Care Team said: “The refreshment trollies make a huge difference to patients loved ones. We have had such a positive response since we introduced them last year.

“Receiving more donations enables us to increase the number of trollies we have on each ward and gives us the extra funds to replace damaged items.

“The donations we receive help us to provide those little extras that make a big difference at such a difficult time.”

Amanda and Angus had exceeded their £500 target by 295%, raising an incredible £1,475 for Ward 7.
