A Yorkshire-based specialist joinery company has completed the transformation of three family rooms within the Neo-Natal Unit at Airedale General Hospital – building on existing community work and recent staff feedback to strengthen local impact.
J Carey Design (JCD), headquartered just one mile from the hospital, identified the opportunity after asking employees where community efforts could be most meaningful at a local level.
The rooms are used by parents when their baby is strong enough to move off the main Neo-Natal Unit and begin preparing for going home. The spaces lacked the warmth and comfort needed during what is often a deeply emotional and challenging time.
JCD approached Airedale Hospital & Community Charity to understand where support could have the greatest impact. The Neo-Natal family rooms were identified as an area of need, after which JCD developed design proposals to improve the spaces.

Following approval, JCD delivered a full upgrade, working with its local supply chain to bring the scheme to life, including support from Readshaw Interiors, Regal Blinds, and Upholstery2U.
This included:
- Bespoke bedside tables and storage units
- Wall-mounted storage solutions
- Backlit art canvases
- Blackout blinds
- Reupholstered reclining chairs
- Hospital-compliant finishes and materials throughout
The aim was to create a more homely, calming environment while ensuring all materials meet healthcare standards.
Artwork featured within the rooms was created and donated by local author and illustrator Jo Overend.
Jo is a children’s author and illustrator based in Yorkshire. Jo donated her artwork to the hospital to say thank you for the care she received when her children were born, and to “provide a little hope and comfort to everyone that sees them’ rather than ‘spread a little happiness to everyone that may see them.”
The project forms part of JCD’s wider commitment to supporting local social value initiatives, with a focus on delivering meaningful, practical impact within the communities they work in.
By aligning professional expertise with employee insight and local need – and working closely with its supply chain – the company hopes the updated spaces will offer comfort and reassurance to families during an important transition.
