Boxing Challenge win raises funds for Community Stroke Team at Local Hospital

By 14 May 2024No Comments

Local Assistant Practitioner, Mandy Aston from the Community Stroke team at Airedale Hospital took on her first white-collar boxing match on 16 March 2024 to raise vital funds for Airedale Hospital & Community Charity.

A white-collar boxing event is built around everyday ‘white-collar’ professions, most participants have little to no prior boxing experience.

Mandy said “I was so excited all day and didn’t feel nervous at all. I found out on the night that the lady I was fighting had fought twice before, but even this news didn’t stir my nerves. It just made me more determined to win.”

Mandy not only secured her first victory in the three-round fight, but also raised a fantastic £685 for the Community Stroke team; a cause very personal to her after experiencing two family members affected by strokes.

She added: “Four of my five children, including one of my sons who has taken part in similar events, and their partners came along to support me on the night alongside my friends. After finding out I had won, I was jumping around and I felt like I had made my family, coaches, friends and of course everyone who had sponsored me proud of what I had achieved.”

Laura Hepworth, Community Fundraiser said: “We are so proud of Mandy for not only winning her fight but taking on the training and being an inspiration to us all with her determination to fundraise for a cause so close to her heart.”

After taking a couple of weeks to rest and allow her injuries to heal, Mandy is pleased that she has been able to return to the gym and is back to running short distances and boxing to keep fit.

Mandy said: “My family have asked me not to fight again, they were all so nervous and worried for me, there is still fundraising to do for the Community Stroke team so I will be trying my hand at something else in the future  – watch this space!”
